until now!Moroccan Americans of the Greater Washington Area –MAGWA- was the first initiative of its kind to try to link Moroccan American organizations regardless of their missions, ideologies or membership sizes. MAGWA –short for “Moroccan Americans of the Greater Washington Area” was initiated by a group of volunteers with the goal of connecting the Moroccan American Community in a manner that promotes its interest in North America, Morocco, and beyond. MAGWA volunteers have proudly carried that mission since the first convention of 2006. And for two consecutive years, they have worked tirelessly to create a solid framework, organized a 2nd successful convention in June 2007, and secured commitment and support from a broader group of talented Moroccan American leaders from around the country.
Immediately after the 2007 convention, the groundwork took an air of urgency and the volunteers organized themselves into various committees and groups. A number of tasks were assigned to each committee with the expected outcome and milestones clearly defined.
Defying the distance and time zone adds, and driven by the selfless cause of creating a solid and lasting foundation for the Moroccan American Community, the volunteers succeeded in setting up the legal framework for the Moroccan American Coalition (M.A.C.). M.A.C. is now a legally recognized organization chartered and registered with government of the District of Columbia (Washington, DC).
As the legal successor to MAGWA, M.A.C. is now the entity charged with linking Moroccan American Organizations and Individuals regardless of their political inclination, social or educational background, geographic location, membership size and/or demographics. As a non-profit organization, MAC is intent on reaching its mission through a structure where efforts are combined, ideas are shared and developed, and voices are heard and encouraged. MAC organizers and volunteers realize that it is only through the sheer number of all the Moroccan American individuals and organizations combined that this organization can thrive and becomes able to advance the mutual interests of Moroccan Americans as a minority community in North America.
In order to wield a persuasive voice that can influence policies affecting our lives, both in the US and in Morocco, we must fully exploit our growing presence to empower our community socially, economically, and politically.
In this spirit and under the theme of “Strength in Unity” that MAC is organizing this third national convention in Denver, Colorado during the month of August 2008
Unlike MAC-I-Washington, DC of 2006 and MAC-II-Alexandria, VA of 2007 which were organized by MAGWA volunteers, MAC-III-Denver, CO is an initiative organized by Moroccan American volunteers from across the nation, and is a continuation of our community’s grassroots civic movement in the United States. This historic event is shaping up to be one of the most exciting and important meetings of Moroccan Americans, and is expected to bring together an outstanding and diverse group of professionals from all walks of life.
It is our time to secure a better tomorrow!
It is our time to work together as one!
It is our time to plan ahead!
It is our time to shine!
If you are a Moroccan American, won’t you please join us for our march forward for a better tomorrow for our community?
